He walked into the kitchen, once again complaining about the idiots in Brisbane. Betty had just removed a piping hot dish of lasagne from the oven. She looked as if she were about to fling it at him, so he sat down and kept quiet for a few moments until she’d placed it on the table.

“Why don’t you go back and pester them?”

“God, Betty, that was about the worst day of my life. I can’t bear the thought of returning.”

“I can assure you it’s much better to go to the city by train. There’s ample parking at Helensvale station, and there’ll be no problems in the city, as the station is a stone’s throw to everything. ”

Alas, Peter was doomed to have nightmare journeys no matter what form of transport he opted for. “Damn you, Betty,” he whinged on his return. “That trip was no better. There was a gas leak at Beenleigh and I had to catch a bus part of the way and then board another train. By the time I arrived, the office had closed for the day because they only work half days on Wednesdays.” He shook his head as he thought about his bad luck. “I’m never going back. I’ll wait impatiently.”
